Eyewear. And why it matters.

Eyewear. And why it matters.

Well hey there.  Welcome back.  For today, we are talking about a topic that is close to our hearts (as we are glasses wearers!).

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just getting started on your two-wheeled adventures, there’s one piece of gear that often gets overlooked but is absolutely essential for a safe and enjoyable ride – eyewear.  In this blog post, we’re diving deep into the world of cycling eyewear, exploring the options available to cyclists and why it’s so important to protect your eyes when you are out and about cycling your bikes!

Why Eyewear Matters

Let’s start with the basics – why do cyclists need to wear glasses anyway? Well, there are a few good reasons:

UV Protection:  Spending hours under the sun’s glare can take a toll on your eyes.  UV radiation can cause serious damage over time, including cataracts and macular degeneration.  Wearing sunglasses with UV protection is like giving your eyes their own personal sunblock, shielding them from harm and keeping your vision sharp for the long haul.

Wind and Debris:  Ever had the joy of riding full speed into a gust of wind? It’s not exactly a pleasant experience, especially when debris from the road decides to join the party.  Glasses act as a barrier, keeping wind, dust, and grit at bay, so you can keep your focus on the road ahead.

Enhanced Visibility:  Clear vision is crucial for navigating busy streets and rugged trails alike.  The right pair of glasses can reduce glare, improve contrast, and enhance visibility in various lighting conditions, giving you a clearer view of your surroundings and helping you stay safe on the road.

Options for Cyclists

Now that we know why eyewear is important, let’s talk about the options available to cyclists:

Contact Lenses: For those who prefer the freedom of riding without glasses, contact lenses are a popular choice. They provide clear vision without the hassle of frames getting in the way, allowing you to focus on the ride ahead.  We would always suggest to wear even a clear pair of wrap around glasses to keep all that crud out of your delicate little eyeballs.

Prescription Sunglasses: If you need corrective lenses to see clearly, prescription sunglasses are a fantastic option.  They offer the dual benefits of sun protection and vision correction, ensuring you can see clearly while shielding your eyes from harmful UV rays.  So many online companies offer prescription sunglasses as options now - you can simply upload your prescription and BOOM - they land on your door a few weeks later!

Wrap-around Sunglasses:  Ah, the unsung heroes of cycling eyewear – wrap-around sunglasses.  These bad boys are designed to fit snugly around your face, providing maximum coverage and protection.  They not only shield your eyes from wind and debris but also reduce glare and enhance visibility, making them a must-have for serious cyclists.  They are our go to choice of sunglasses and as we spend so much time on our bikes, we invested in some seriously good eyewear from our friends over in Oakley - they ain't cheap, but they protect your eyes so well and are a perfect snug fit.  Have a looky look HERE (these are our personal preference, each to their own!).

Final Thoughts

Whether you opt for contact lenses, prescription sunglasses, or the trusty wrap-around variety, the important thing is to keep those beautiful eyeballs of yours protected.  As cyclists, we owe it to ourselves to prioritise our eye health and safety on the road.  So, next time you gear up for a ride, don’t forget to grab your shades – your eyes will thank you for it!
